Well, i will take the hook of John and speak about our experience. In 2006, a friend and volunteer of our community, suggested to do a brazilian meeting of BrOffice.org (here is called in this way by trademark problems). The model was *very* different of traditional (face-to-face), because Brazil is very large. Our country have ~ 2x the size of European Union, and we have our economical problems, so, the model of travel/migrate for a unique point is very expansive. The idea was to use a video conference(VC) infra structure. Here, we have a national service to industry, called SENAI, that have the bigger VC infra of South America, based in ISDN (a commuted net). With SENAI as partner of Broo, we did in 2006 the first event, where Louis spoke directly from Toronto to 826 people, distributed in 18 brazilian states. SENAI have good auditoriums in each state capital. This event was of 1 day. In 2007, was the 2o edition, with the participation of John, talking directly from him country and Bemmer from Sun/Germany, and more Galicia and Paraguay connected. To galician guys was easy, because portuguese and galician is very similar, but to paraguayan people (that talk spanish) was more hard. In this year was 20 states, more Galicia/Spain and Paraguay, with ~ 1500 subscribers. In 2008, was more people, ~2400 subscribers, in Brazil, Paraguay, Portugal and Spain (Galicia). In 2009, we had problems with the infra structure of VC, changing our event to now, april/10. But this year, we think do different of other years. As was discussed here, the face-to-face is VERY important, so, we tried to bring the foreign speakers to Brazil. Our expectation is to bring ~ 5000 people for this edition. The theme is one: BrOffice.org! but with different visions, like market, community, and devel. Well.. sorry by the large email, but is possible to talk many pages about our experience over all discussion in this thread, but this is the geral vision. Regards Claudio ps: sorry by the delayed reply
