Getting write access to the repositories requires karma which can be earned by contributing to the project before, both in therms of bug-reports, design work, writing documentation and of course code patches. [1,2] I'm sure the rest of the dev-team is curious to see your proposed redesign, maybe you can share them with us? You could either post your patch to this list - or maybe it is easier if you provide a few screenshots of your redesign so we can discuss them here.
