Hi, According to quick look at the documentation, archetypes are indeed based on velocity.
http://maven.apache.org/archetype/maven-archetype-plugin/examples/create-multi-module-project.html ( look for "velocity" occurences) Any reason why you are specifically interested in knowing that ? It probably doesn't matter that much if you want to make an archetype.
