IIRC I've seen some plugins strugling with plexus-utils-3.1.0, so I'd
prefer not to upgrade that one.
I don't think plexus-component-metadata is a drop-in replacement for
plexus-maven-plugin. I would suggest to first verify which projects use
plexus-maven-plugin and try to replace these first before removing it from
this parent.
