Would it be possible to at least get rid of direct (and transitive if
possible) dependencies on maven 2.x artifacts ? Especially those that do

While agree with you, but nothing is really broken and stopping the
release. Please create an issue for this. This is defintively something
for M2 I will happily integrate.
