Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
        Key: MPGUMP-1
    Summary: Use Gump's <maven goal="X Y Z"
       Type: New Feature

     Status: Open
   Priority: Major

 Original Estimate: Unknown
 Time Spent: Unknown
  Remaining: Unknown

    Project: maven-gump-plugin

   Assignee: Brett Porter
   Reporter: Adam Jack

    Created: Tue, 8 Jun 2004 9:05 AM
    Updated: Tue, 8 Jun 2004 9:05 AM

Description:
Currently Maven's gump goal generates a gump.xml that contains a <ant target="X"
entry. Gump now supports a <maven goal="X" element/attribute, which is the prefered
usage (since it used Maven to build, instead of Ant).

Note: Without a goal attribute Gump uses a "jar" default goal. Multiple goals (space
separated) are supported.
