I don't think so. After all, we are already being at the edge checking the versions on changes.xml, so why not check then at the SCM tags level too (and only when the project has the <versions> defined )?

I think the idea per se is useful; maybe we could change the default message. I will create a patch/jira for it anyway, and then we can wait for opinions (maybe you could send a proposal/vote to the list, as that change will impact the other committers doing release management for the other plugins)
