1 + 2) the head cvs version of the core is not considered stable, you should instead check out the MAVEN-1_0-BRANCH branch of the maven core, and the head version of the plugins
3) AFAIK most complete doco about bootstrap is : http://maven.apache.org/start/bootstrap.html
