To avoid this happening again, I am filing a JIRA issue. We should compare the plugins dependencies against those in the Maven distribution, and if they are different the plugin can fail out and better prompt for upgrades.
This will mean introducing a "compatible since" version in the POM of those dependencies, which I wanted to bring up anyway. This is all related to the version ranges.
