I eventually gave up on maven1 and used maven2 instead. The xmlbeans-maven-plugin includes the required memory options to make xmlbeans work in the form of the memoryMaximumSize option to the plugin.
IFX needed approx 500M, and ACORD needed approximately 1GB.
