As far as I experienced, the dependencies get updated automatically whenever the
pom.xml has changed. Since eclipse has a (pretty nasty) virtual filesystem
you need to refresh the pom.xml or activate refresh automatically in your
eclipse config.

This happens when a dependency could not be resolved at all.
Please inspect the log carefully and post more details.

I am not a developer but there is a new release from time to time.
I also wait for a really usable release, though.
For the moment you neet to live with "mvn eclipse:eclipse" if you want
to work effectively with a large project.
