Sort of related to local repositories, and a thought that came back to me after reading about separating snapshots and releases - could we do something about caching the results of transitive dependency resolution? As fast as XML pull parsing is, it's repeated over and over again for release dependencies but never changes. I did profile one of our builds some months ago and found some very large proportion of the build time was given over to parsing the hundreds of separate XML pom files needed by transitive dependencies.
