The machine was just put in the rack for builds and it has 32gb RAM so we can go to the next level.

Well, MAVEN_OPTS is for the *forked* Maven runs. Please have a look at
https://ci.sonatype.org/job/Maven-Plugins-ITs/179/console
it crashed before Maven ever came into play, it was just doing an update
from SVN. What is your theory why this build crashed?
