Apologies: I hit the wrong button. I am enjoying this thread. My main observation so far is that if you need one custom scope (and I think you do) then you will need more. "Provided" is not enough.
The custom scope seems to let you get at lists of dependencies that have a special purpose. They seem to do this without breaking anything or interfering with the existing classpaths.. There can be more than one special purpose. There is more than just Java.
