+0 I personally don't have the git knowledge to be able to help, but I'm interested in learning the new technology.
In my view the tooling for git is not yet as good as for SVN, but it's getting there. We have two important things to look out for: 1. Support for git at the ASF, and documentation about it, is not nearly as good as for SVN yet. That will hopefully change over time as more and more projects move, but it's still something we need to be prepared for. 2. As with all things new there will be mistakes made in the beginning. Let us start small, with one or two sub-projects, and learn from that experience before we try to do a full scale migration. I suggest starting with maven-3, and maybe scm or wagon which are pretty stand-alone projects.
