I think the main issue is that we loose control over the system/environment variables, because all these values will directly be available. Now you have to explicitly define which of these variables you want to use in the shell. For the maven-release-plugin I'd like to keep its current behavior, and I

Do we rely on shell expansion capabilities in our code ? Can we switch
to Runtime.exec safely ? The mind boggles....
