One of the key goals in ASM 4 was to improve backwards (binary) compatibility
of releases going forwards:

So far I’ve found ASM 5 beta to be a drop-in replacement for ASM 4 from a
client perspective, so +1 on moving those plugins up to 4.2 to begin with.
( then people can always try out ASM 5 beta by adding it as a dependency to the
plugin declaration in the pom.xml )
