Noticed this when looking at https://reviews.apache.org/r/21233/.

Since Subprocess always replaces the child process' stdin / stdout / stderr 
with pipes, the child process can block if the caller does not read from the 
pipes.

We should provide some additional control to callers over the pipe redirection 
to make this more explicit.
