Direct buffers outpeform heap buffers if the content of the buffer is
not modified at all. A proxy might be a good example.

MINA doesn't have any control over how direct buffers are managed by
JVM. The management strategy can be very different among various VMs,
so we removed support for pooling in 2.0. Because we think it's still
premature to tell which management strategy is best for most VMs, it's
user's job to manage direct buffers for now. Ideally, JVM should be
able to manage direct buffers very efficiently so nobody doesn't care
about direct buffer allocation.
