There are couple of examples attached to the JIRA. The filter is for protocol that have Request-Response paradigm (infact most does). You can send multipart responses as well. I am yet to fully decipher to this part, but should be something like this Client -> encode -> network -> Server Receive -> Decode -> Request/Response Filter -> IOHandler The filter converts to Request and Response Objects and operate upon them. One can timeout waiting for a response. This is just first review.
