TRS80 was my first experience as a coder, if you exclude my TI57 (ok,
I'm an old fart, I know ;)

Totally agree. 128 char per line is acceptable, IMHO. Otherwise, we
actually have some coding convention, the Oracle's one (oops, I mean,
Sun ). I don't think it says anything about 80 chars per line...
