It's quite tricky avoiding that when using Maven. If you want to use Maven to sign and hash the source and binary archives, the artifacts generally have to be attached to the project and so end up in Nexus. Maven is designed around using Maven Central for all downloads, and neither it nor Nexus really cater for the ASF requirement to release source archives separately. Other projects (including Maven and Tomcat) now include the archives in Nexus, so it's not unusual.
