I think maybe u need more that one tools to change the resolution:
1. "gconftool-2 --type "string" --set /desktop/moblin/screen/resolutions
1024x600,800x480"
2. also u need gtf and xrandr to create and use new modes.
if u wanna start X in 800x480 resolution, u would better to change the
xorg.conf, as following:
Section "Monitor"
......
Modeline "800x480" 44.64 800 840 920 1040 480 481 484 505 -hsync
-vsync
Modeline "1024x600" 46.93 1024 1064 1168 1312 600 601 604 621
-HSync +Vsync
EndSection
Section "Screen"
.....
SubSection "Display"
# Modes "1024x600"
# Virtual 1024 600
Modes "800x480"
Virtual 800 480
EndSubSection
EndSection
