I am very new to Moblin and was hoping someone from the Moblin
community would comment on Johnny's note. ISV dilemma may be worth
giving a thought. On those lines are there any plans for downstream
variants of Moblin - I see healthcare , automotive etc as some focus
areas mentioned at Moblin.org. OSVs communicating their plans would be
useful as well

Hello again everyone,
I'm wondering if there is a list of OSV's developing OS's for MID's
I really dont understand too well the biz logic behind open source
projects... it normally gets me into trouble.. ;)
But if I can venture my perspective on the Moblin project...
Moblin equates more or less to the "firmware" level... a basic engine
that provides a "get going" framework, and a mechanism to get at the
respective hardware funcionality, like GPS, 3G, Wireless, Radio, Lan,
Video, Storage etc etc
Then OSV's are developing above this, some targeting cell networks,
some targeting other retail outlets, wholesalers etc.... the important
thing is that this is the OS level... and they will be different,
albeit compat with the "firmware level".
Some may be targeting games, some alternatives to laptops, some super
cell phones, some home theater, some biz applications, some integrated
desktop systems... the scope is huge.
Then above this is the ISV with particular applications in mind... the
category I probably fit into.
Accountng systems, gaming consoles and periphs... and a million other
things.
So... I'm thinking that yes there is scope to work together, but there
also has to be the ability to pair off.... ie ISV's have to know what
various OSV's are doing... and become early adoptors, and later
probably agents for that OSV because they will lock into that OSV.
There has to be a mechanism for OSV's working on their specialized
area to advertise there intended focus... else ISV's are on hold.
If Moblin is going to compete with something like XP embedded, there
has to be collaboration, but at the same time, if an ISV is targeting
a specialized system in the airline industry, a gaming OSV is probably
no good to them.
To expect the ISV to then move down to hardware level and effectively
create a whole XP as well as their application... would mean hiring
staff under 10 years old because thats how long it would take....
Is it at all possible to have some sort of cooperation matirix, or
allow OSV's to talk about their offerings... or something so that ISVs
can start working with that particular offering...
If ISV's have to wait and wait.... XP will probably be the first thing
they see...
Is a wiki or something possible so that OSV's can say... this is what
we doing, we into gaming and already have API, or we are creating
software dev kits based on python and Java, or this will be a super
cell phone and it will support flex and java...
Some way to kick off sync'd development....
Or is the intension that Moblin will in its conclusion be a modular
system that allows for anything, be that radio streaming, gaming, GPS
and the maps.... ie Moblin will be a tool for ISV's?
As an ISV I'm interested to know what OSV's are out there... thanks
