This is true and (partly) my fault. The sample apps work with the tip of the clutter development branch which swapped the parameters for the call to clutter-color-shade. But the alpha2 image doesn't have the clutter source tip. There are new alpha3 images on their way and I will make sure the sample apps work with these. Sorry for the temporary mismatch.
