It's not trivial to start and stop gpsd on demand though. Just take a
look at what Nokia had to do (that's libgpsmgr in Maemo 4 if I recall
correctly).

Note that Maemo 5 has Gypsy instead of gpsd, apparently used via the
closed source liblocation.
