I think the OpenSUSE-Moblin integration work is using NetworkManager,
you might look at their work as a base.  Slightly better would be if
support for this lived in the Moblin tree, even better would be if
there was only one networking stack.

I can say though that running nm-applet as root is probably the first
problem here.
