Hi, I would like to share my impressions about moblin with you. I prefer to warn in advance that I have a tendancy to describe the bad points of a system, without enumerating the good things. I say a lot af bad things in the next lines, but be sure I still appreciate moblin a lot.
First, few words so that you can spot my user profile: I first heard about this distro when looking for a fast booting OS. My opinions about operating systems is that they should have a quasi-instant boot. Computers get more powerful year after year, but the OS still take so long to start. Is this normal ? I then completely agree with the vision stated in this conference: http://moblin.org/sites/all/files/u123/plumbers_fastboot.pdf . This is why I have installed the alpha and beta versions of moblin2. I bought a netbook (eeepc 1000h) to use it during my travels, I am often in planes/airports, *without *internet. Applications I use most are web browser + skype when online, media player, text/image editor (for svg coding), text processor, spreadsheet. I have no interest in the 'cloud' now. no twitter. instant messaging is just for sometimes. Now here are my feelings about moblin: I feel that the vision for this OS has changed since the beta version. Alpha 1 and 2 were really fast booting, with a classic desktop environment. In beta, the fast boot has been somehow sacrified to get the very beautiful interface. It seems the optic is now to look like the competitors (jolicloud, UNR and others...). The 'cloud' is put frontward, with a section in the top bar specially dedicated to twitter and other social networks. Here is my review about the toolbar items: - myzone: interesting, but does not seem customizable enough. For example, I do not use calendar in my netbook, it woudl be nice to be able to remove and save this space for something else. - status: no use for my user profile - people: i would go there only ocasionnaly - internet: yes - media: yes - pasteboard: no thanks - applications: this is the center of my interest. Applications are far too far, so many clicks and scroll required to access them. - zones: interesting concept. The current UX version really lacks of flexibility, I do not feel it customizable (also bad usability for my type of use of a netbook). As far as I understood, the moblin component will be available even for other distros, that is really good, and hopefuly the great work will be used to derive other distros that will match all tastes. Also, I maybe should try to set the minimal desktop packages group available in the repository ? That is it, I hope the comments will be useful for you, I thought that feedback is what you expect from users trying your alpha and beta versions. Cheers, alef _______________________________________________ Moblin dev Mailing List [email protected] To manage or unsubscribe from this mailing list visit: https://lists.moblin.org/mailman/listinfo/dev or your user account on http://moblin.org once logged in.
