actually - I got it figured out:

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 inet 192.168.1.1 netmask 255.255.255.0

does the trick for me.

there is no current way to do a static IP address, this is planned for a future 
release.

And I would not recommend even thinking about using 
/etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts... we don't use those
in the OS, if you add stuff there things will just get confused.
