codec support is the usual painful story, which is that
encumbered ones can't go in the public repository.
this is no different than other open distributions, e.g.
Fedora.  yes there are ways to get them, some of them
"more legal" than others.  you can arrange to buy them,
for example.  when you get a netbook or other device with 
a preloaded moblin-based distro you can expect that to
have been taken care of, because they have a way to collect
royalty fees when required - it's tied to the actual sale
of something.  there are also ways to get free ones whose
legality may be questionable, or at least vary by jurisdiction.
