There are quite a few different Moblin Alpha versions. Most likely you don't have support for the Congatec Board Timberdale FPGA that interfaces to the Ethernet chip. When you got the Congatec kit didn't it include a single printed page telling you how to get software releases specifically for this board?

The same works fine on Atom Portwel Board without any issue.
