Genesis was a prototype and isn't used, you can find out the installed
applications by reading the desktop files in /usr/share/applications/.
See http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/desktop-entry-spec
and other associated specifications on freedesktop.org for the specs,
and you'll probably want to use GKeyFile to parse them.
