if the graphics driver is the problem you should be able to boot to single user 
mode and edit xorg.conf before starting X.

Edit the boot command line to boot to init level 3 (or single), you can remove 
"silent" too if you want to see all the boot script output.

After editing xorg.conf, run startX to bring up the graphics driver.
