That's a fine idea. I've worked on the jboss packaging plugin to a small
extent in the past - but used it frequently at my last job. It sounds like a
great addition, since the existing packaging plugin is fairly general - and
with a little initiative (and small bug fixes) could probably be promoted
out of the sandbox.
