I use Maven 2.0.7 and have configured the plugin as follows:
<plugin>
<groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
<artifactId>clirr-maven-plugin</artifactId>
<configuration>
        <failOnError>false</failOnError>
</configuration>
<executions>
        <execution>
                <goals>
                        <goal>check</goal>
                </goals>
        </execution>
</executions>
</plugin>

the goal i use: mvn clirr:check. The project is a multimodule project with
Hibernate, Spring (MVC, Remoting), WAS Portal 6, etc.. dependencies.
Unfortunatly i can't procude a testcase but a simple project with some Spring
dependencies might to the trick. Use the maven-release-plugin to do a
release:prepare and release:perform and then do mvn clirr:check. I'll also look
into the source code and try some other stuff.

> If a dependency is declared optional - and classes in it are either extended

>       java.lang.ClassNotFoundException:
