I attached a patch for scm rev 6841 which moves the code from 1.4 to 1.5.
I think the generification makes the code easier to follow. I updated the
for-loops where appropriate.
I haven't triple-checked the changes, but all the tests still pass. I'll
review the patch again within the next few days. I just wanted to get it
posted so you could take a look at it.
