Indeed Arnaud is correct, the main benefit for us is the short syntax. There are no limitations with the full standalone package. On the mojo project side, I think it is a good addition to the current set in terms of code analysis reporting (I'm not fan of the term "quality analysis") and should help the usage and the democratization of good practices. Maven is not just a simple build tool, it has done a lot of great things last years for ALM. Sonar is a good addition to carry on that way.
Adding on Dan's comments, there are currently 4 full time contributors at SonarSource, including 2 developers. Only the maven plugin (the boostrapper) is supposed to move to mojo. Changing the license is not a problem. If it's OK I'll create an issue in Jira next days.
