gwt:run does not compile classes

The documentation at
http://mojo.codehaus.org/gwt-maven-plugin/user-guide/hosted.html says" You can
use mvn gwt:run to launch the hosted mode from command line. In such case, the
plugin will compile your classes and prepare the exploded webapp structure. The
hosted mode is then launched on your webapp."
However in the console I see that the compile is not excuted. If I do mvn
gwt:compile gwt:run I see "gwt-maven-plugin:2.3.0-1:compile" as I woild expect.
