another thing that i remember of my list of things (partially) blocking
progress on v-m-p is that i may need to finish xevpp.codehaus.org to
simplify some of the rewriting... not a big blocker for now, but will
hinder new features... bug fixing can start once the tests all pass on the
target maven versions
