Currently native2ascii is run on process-classes phase that is irrelevant to it's target. So annotation processors run in compile phase can't use it's result. I see no reason to not to invoke it in process-resources phase.
As example, I use native2ascii to translate i18n files that are processed by JBoss Solder Tooling to generate i18n classes.
