I don't think that it is too specific.

I think many persons have the problem that:

  • They want a unique version number even with snapshot versions
  • They have the problem that many products have problems something with something like -SNAPSHOT inside the version number.

Of course this can be made more generally but I have not really an idea about other usefull use cases then the one described by me.

I can provide a patch if I'm sure that it will be accepted.
