The LDAP plugin should support pre-authentication (authenticated by e.g. proxy, principal in HTTP header). In this case it would only use the LDAP server for authorization. Connection to LDAP would be using a technical user.
Use case
We run an LDAP server into which content is synced from external sources. The password hash format (apr1) used by the external source is not support by the LDAP server. Hence, authentication against LDAP fails.
