@Ian: I added "versions:display-plugin-updates versions:display-property-updates versions:display-dependency-updates" to the "build" and to the "clean and build" action in netbeans. I did a clean and build with 3.0.5 (bundled with netbeans) and with 3.10 (not bundled) and did not get any trouble. Removing your two references to the maven-site-plugin did produce the NPE.
Could you post a debug output like I did (maven -X)? Maybe this would show if your problem (on your computer) is different to mine or not.
