Robert Puncel edited a comment on an issue   Re: Missing version update inside dependency I definitely agree with you that the option 1 can work for this example.  I'd like to provide a different example to illustrate my viewpoint. Let's say projectwithdependency does not list parent as its parent pom.  It is still dependent on someproject, and someproject still inherits from parent, and still does not specify its version.  The Maven command remains the same as we have been using. In this configuration, there is no way to take advantage of the vmp's ability to go through dependencies and update them with the current plugin.  The :set goal fails on any project without its version specified explicitly, and the projectwithdependency can no longer set it the version of its dependency according to a property.   I think part of the difference on this issue as well is that you are interpreting -DartifactId and -DgroupId as an "include" type argument, in that specifying it removes the rest of the artifacts from those to be operated on.  However, these values are always set to some value (usually $ \ {project.artifactId \ } and $ \ {project.groupId \ }, so I'd argue that they shouldn't be treated in this manner. By the way, I looked at the issue listed as related (MVERSIONS-131), and there is this comment that I think shows my point: ??Based on the specified change initiator: groupId:artifactId:oldVersion->newVersion it looks to see if that change has knock-on side-effects... so if the project being changed is used as a parent for other project and those child projects do not explicitly specify a xpath:/project/version and instead rely on inheritance from xpath:/project/parent/version then those child projects are added to the list of changes. ?? ?? Once the list of GAV changes is complete, the plugin then checks all the <dependency> references to see if they match any of the oldVersion's used in the final list of GAV changes, in which case they are changed to the newVersion . ?? which is exactly the behavior this issue is asking for. Child project that does not define an explicit version (version is inherited from the parent) 3.) Another project that holds a reference to the child project mentioned before in the dependency section. Inside that dependency we have to specify the version of the project that is reference...
