Why does renderer for commandLink check instance of UIOutput

I'm a litttle confused as to why the decode method of
HtmlLinkRendererBase checks if the component is an instanceof UIOuput.
 When would that ever be the case?  I am assuming there is a MyFaces
specific reason but it escapes me.
