How fast do you think that JDK 5 will be accepted by the big customers? Usually the appserver-industry waits quite some time until they go for a new jdk. And lots of customers will then wait some more time before they will upgrade to a new app-server-version that supports the new jdk. Even if they decide early to hop on the new wagon, it can take them 6-12 months before the new versions can be used in production...
JDK 1.4 compatibility should be conserved for the next versions if possible. regards Alexander
