I have the same problem that Jon, although this happens for a commandLink within a datatable within a tab (did you manage to fix it Jon?).

I have tried to use saveState on the tabbedPane selectedIndex but that didn't seem to work...

Actually I did not solve the keep the client in place roundtripping
problem, although it should be fairly straightforward to implement, all
you need is an extra hidden field which stores the active tabbing
position, that way you can survive roundtripping...
