There's two reasons why I tend to favor nightlies on OSS projects:
1. they have a 'name' you can refer to, and discuss with other users.
I know, with svn you can say "I'm at 305607" but many people are new
to svn.
2. painful experiences in getting development environments set up on
other projects. The new build structure was pretty easy to set up,
but I started from having Eclipse and svn on my machine, and had come
to terms with creating a new svn repository entry in Eclipse
The primary benefit to the project is that you'll get more casual
users trying out intermediate builds.
