There is a command line option to force maven to print exceptions. The full stack trace should also be in a directory for your maven client. I think the dir name is sure-fire. I seem to remember writing that class because a different class had been changed in the code base but it had not been changed in the conf file. Around that time we also had an instance where the conf file simply making it into the jars. The javadocs for the class's parent, AbstractClassElementTestCase, can explain more.
