I think adding a separate renderer should resolve that issue
once we have that one, setting the old one to deprecated and
adding the documentation on how to enable the old one with a different
renderer setting ought to be enough.

Yes, one of the reasons why I would love to have dojo in tom is
that I finally can fix up the dreaded remaining popup control
bugs, which are all helper function related.

Not really... that burden is on me, as it seems, you could give me
a hand in the table suggest fixup which I cannot do at the same time ;-)
